Flottenkommando in Glücksburg-Meierwik bei Flensburg | Während des Kalten Krieges hatte das Flottenkommando eine Doppelrolle: Es führte die deutschen Seestreitkräfte national und war zudem als NATO-Hauptquartier (Flag Officer Germany) in die NATO-Struktur eingebunden. Nach dem Ende des Ost-West-Konflikts entfielen die NATO-Aufgaben, und das Kommando konzentrierte sich auf die Führung von Auslandseinsätzen der Bundeswehr und Übungen.
